Background
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is globally recognised as one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology. The organisation has pioneered major scientific techniques such as DNA sequencing, protein structure determination, and the development of monoclonal antibodies.
Over its distinguished history, LMB scientists have earned 12 Nobel Prizes, numerous Royal Society awards, and a host of other scientific honours. As a world-class research institution, LMB is committed to advancing both scientific excellence and equity, diversity, and inclusion within the research community.
The Challenge
Within the wider scientific sector, Black heritage scientists remain significantly underrepresented. To address this, the LMB launched the Rising Talent Fellowship, a dedicated initiative designed to attract, support, and develop early-career Black scientists.
Upon recruiting the first cohort, the LMB recognised that the Fellows might face unique challenges, such as feelings of isolation or underrepresentation, given the demographic makeup of the scientific community. While the laboratory provided strong scientific mentorship, there was also a clear need for holistic, non-scientific support to nurture confidence, wellbeing, and long-term career growth.
The Solution
To complement the scientific mentoring already in place, the LMB sought professional coaching support to help Fellows navigate both personal and professional aspects of their early research careers.
Following a recommendation from a mutual contact, Tafadzwa Maisva from School for CEOs was engaged to deliver a bespoke coaching programme for the inaugural Rising Talent Fellows.
The approach began with introductory ‘chemistry’ sessions to ensure each Fellow felt comfortable and aligned with the coaching process. This was followed by six one-to-one online coaching sessions, tailored to the individual needs and aspirations of each Fellow.
The Impact
The coaching programme proved to be transformational for the participants. Both Fellows reported significant personal and professional benefits from the experience, noting enhanced self-awareness, resilience, and confidence in navigating their early postdoctoral careers.
Recognising the value of this support, LMB approved an extension of the coaching for a further six sessions per participant. Encouraged by the success of the pilot, the organisation has now committed to offering the same coaching provision to all future cohorts of Rising Talent Fellows, embedding it as a key component of their development journey.
Client Reflections
“The coaching provided through School for CEOs has been invaluable for our Fellows. It offered a safe space to explore challenges beyond the laboratory and has supported their growth as both scientists and individuals. We look forward to continuing this partnership to ensure our Rising Talent Fellows thrive within the scientific community.”
Looking Ahead
The success of the Rising Talent Fellowship Coaching Programme highlights the power of tailored coaching in addressing systemic underrepresentation and fostering belonging within scientific institutions. Through ongoing collaboration with School for CEOs, the LMB continues to champion diversity and inclusion, ensuring that every Fellow has the opportunity to thrive, lead, and inspire the next generation of scientists.
