School for CEOs pioneers new learning concept
16 January 2012
The School for CEOs is a brand new idea in senior executive education. Co-Founder Patrick Macdonald, Chairman of Reconomy and former CEO of John Menzies plc, has long wondered at how little preparation there is for the top job in business. “It amazes me that we are perfectly happy with the idea that actors go to drama school and artists go to art school but business leaders are ‘born and not made’. Having been a CEO myself, there is a lot to learn in a very short period of time, under intense scrutiny. I have long believed that we can do a better job of preparing people for the very demanding job of Chief Executive.”
Patrick has teamed up with David Sole, the well-known business coach and former international rugby captain. “I think this is a really exciting idea. I have coached many people in CEO and other senior positions and it’s apparent to me that there are many skills and tools we can give leaders and prospective leaders to help them succeed. That’s better for them, their shareholders, their colleagues and their employees.”
The School for CEOs launches in London in autumn 2012 with a 2-day programme taught by practitioners – current and former business leaders – rather than academics. The programme is aimed at business leaders who are aiming to secure a CEO position, leaders who are preparing to take up a CEO position, and existing CEOs who would like to broaden and deepen their ‘toolbox’.
“This is something new. There is nothing else like it on the market today. We have already had a lot of interest from companies and individuals who see the value in this idea” says David. “This is the perfect preparation for senior business people in quoted companies, private-equity backed businesses and family firms. We can help them succeed” says Patrick.
