First Edinburgh Runway programme takes off…
21 April 2016
On 20th April, 15 business leaders joined School for CEOs for their inaugural Edinburgh Runway programme.
Delegates from a range of sectors including financial services, technology, broadcasting, brewing, property investment and sport gathered for a formal pre-course dinner held at Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh, The Caledonian.
Before dinner David Sole OBE, Co-founder of School for CEOs and co-author of 21st-Century Networking, delivered a session on the importance of having a good network, with key insight on how to develop and leverage both personal and business networks.
Later in the evening Norman Murray, Chairman of Edrington Group, shared some of his own experiences with Edrington and also as former Chair of Cairn Energy and Petrofac. He spoke about the importance of values and honesty as you develop your career; “one of the most important pieces of advice I could give any leader is to be true to yourself and your values and to make sure that your values align with those of your organisation.”
The following day, the group gathered for a full day workshop where they worked through the results of a self-assessment, and shaped their development plans for the next 3-5 years, using the School for CEOs Five-Dimensional Management™ framework.
The group were also joined by guest speakers Judy Wagner, Director at FWB Park Brown, and Andy Houghton, Managing Director of Wholehearted Consulting and former HR Director at British Gas. Following his session, Andy commented, “It was a pleasure to join the School for CEOs today to talk about succession planning. For any candidate looking to step up to a higher role, it is crucial to balance confidence in your ability with humility and authenticity.”
David Sole, reflecting on the full day workshop, added, “we could not have asked for a better group of delegates to launch the Runway programme in Edinburgh. Engaging yet reflective, participants challenged and supported each other throughout the day, and there was a great energy in the room.”
Notes for editors
The School for CEOs is a new concept in senior executive education. It was founded in 2011 by: Patrick Macdonald, Chairman of Reconomy, CEO of Dalestone Energy and former Chief Executive of John Menzies plc; and David Sole, business coach and former international rugby captain. The next School for CEOs programme is the 1-day non-residential Runway programme on 19 May in London. The next Vital Few programme will take place in London on 12/13 October. The 2-day residential programme will be taught by practitioners: current and former business leaders. It aims to provide senior businessmen and women with the insights and experience they need to be successful in CEO and other senior leadership positions.
